Children are our teachers!!

                                                  MY TEACHER
- Sruthi Ravichandran

I’ve always been an exceptionally selfish creature. And being an only child meant that my every whim was satisfied. At least that’s what happened till I reached the glorious age of four. Then everything changed when my brother came along. Yes, that little bundle of joy that arrived on March 2nd 2002 changed everything.

When I happen to think of teachers (forgive me- it’s not very often) a severe image of a woman with hair pulled back into a neat precise bun, perfectly ironed clothes as crisp as a potato chip, and an icy cold nonexistent smile is the image that enters my mind. It’s either that frightening image of an excessively strict teacher or a happy go-lucky picture of a plump jolly looking Mrs. Santa Claus as a teacher. I’d go with Mrs. Santa Claus any day but sadly she lives in the North Pole. Who knew that my brother, the one I endlessly complain about and evilly plot to get in trouble could be my teacher. But my brother is more than your average class teacher he’s the best teacher I could wish for. He might not be able to solve those frustrating, mind racking algebraic problems or dissect a frog in biology without fainting, but he sure does know the lessons of life.

When I take a step back I realize that my life would be incomplete without my brother, like a sky without stars. Over the years I’ve learnt many things from my young guru.

The word SHARING had been alien to me till my brother came along. A simple incident will explain what I mean to say better than a thousand words. I’ve never bothered to share chocolates with my sweet worshipping brother. In fact, it’s always about stuffing those chocolates down my throat as fast as I possible. But that one-day changed my concrete heart.  I was trudging along the field when my brother ran up to me breathless. He hurriedly placed a sticky melted mass of chocolate in my palm. “I saved you one”, he yelled as he disappeared into the throng of kids running about the playground. I guess that melted chocolate melted my heart. But it’s not only that one incident there are thousands of such memories that can’t be put into words. He continues to surprise me, his wise words sounding foreign in the body of a child.

Recently, my brother and I were watching an inspiring story about a limbless man who had succeeded in life. I of course applauded the man but as the evening progressed I simply forgot. My brother or should I say angel cried at night for that man. I watched choked with emotion as the tears pooled in my mother’s eyes as she held my sobbing brother. Till date, I’ll never know how deeply my eight-year-old angel was affected by that video but he greatly affected me that day. He taught me compassion.

I’ve always had a fiery temper, I’m like a fuse of dynamite about to blow anytime.  I’ve ranted and screamed at my brother endless times but never has he yelled back, He taught me tolerance and respect. He has never raised a hand at anyone without reason, through him I learnt that patience is the golden key. He may not realize that he teaches me but he is a standing figure in my life. I can’t say I’m an angel now, I occasionally fall of the wagon but a glance at my brother puts me back in the right path. My brother of course isn’t perfect we bicker like cats and dogs and he has many flaws but the goodness of his heart outweighs them all. My simple words can never do him just but he is my mentor, my inspiration. My personal angel from heaven, my brother Rishi is here for me always as a brother and as a teacher!
